Day Two Results
LA QUINTA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's golf team jumped into the lead after four different Aggies each shot 70s, finishing at 8-under 280 on the second day of action at the Big West Conference Championships at the La Quinta Resort Mountain Course in La Quinta, Calif.
UC Davis is at 6-under 570 after 36 holes of competition and lead Pacific by just one stroke. UC Santa Barbara is in third at three under.
Individually, four players rank in the top 10 for UC Davis with Jonny Baxter leading the way. He is tied for fifth at 3-under 141 while Matt Seramin is only two strokes back and is tied for seventh. Mike Brockington and Matt Hansen are tied for tenth and are even for the tournament.
Luke Vivolo is tied for 16th to round out the Aggie scoring.
Baxter, Seramin, Brockington and Hansen each posted 70s to help UC Davis make a 10-stroke improvement on its team total.
Baxter finished his front nine at one over, but birdies on three of the first five holes of his back nine dropped him to two under. He stayed there with back-to-back pars, but a bogey on the par-4 17th hole moved him back to one over. He closed out with a birdie, his fifth of the round, on the 18th hole to finish at 2-under 70.
Seramin's 70 was a three-shot improvement on his first round score and was a result of a consistent front nine that featured a birdie to open, then eight straight pars. He wavered between one under and two under throughout his back nine, but a birdie on the 18th hole resulted in his final score of two under.
Hansen, who finished with a 74 after Sunday's first round, found himself at 3-under 69 with just five holes to go, but an unfortunate double bogey on the par-4 14th moved him back to one under. He immediately birdied on the very next hole, however, to get back to two under, then parred his final three holes to shoot 70.
Brockington mirrored Seramin's front nine and put up the exact same result as his Aggie teammate, leading off with a birdie then making par on the next eight consecutive holes. He bridied on the par-4 11th hole to move to two under, then four additional pars plus a birdie on the par-3 16th hole put him at three under with just two holes left. Brockington bogeyed on the 17th hole to go back to two under where he would finish.
Vivolo shot a 74 in his second round, opening his back nine with six straight par shots. He birdied on the final hole of the day to finish at two over.
Pacific's Alex Edfort continues to lead the field at eight under and holds a one-stroke lead over Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano.
The final round of the Big West Conference Championship begins on Tuesday at 7:15 a.m.
