STANFORD, Calif. - Jonathan Peterson broke his own school record in the 5,000-meter run for the second time in just over a week while Alycia Cridebring had a career-best effort in the 1,500 as UC Davis showcased a pair of strong races Sunday at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford.
Peterson, a senior from Clovis who lowered his school record to 13 minutes, 54.78 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays on Apr. 20, dropped it another six seconds to 13:48.43 on Sunday while posting a provisional qualifying mark for the U.S. Olympic Trials in late June in Eugene, Ore. The provisional standard is 13:50.00 while the automatic standard is 13:33.00.
The elite field, which was paced for much of the race by American mile record-holder Alan Webb, chased the automatic mark before the top 15 reached the "B" standard. Unattached runner Jake Hurysz won the race in 13:38.59 while Kevin Williams of Oklahoma was second in 13:39.87. Peterson was 12th overall.
Peterson entered the week with the top 5,000 time in the Big West which led him to the conference's Track Athlete of the Week honor on Wednesday for the second time this season.
Cridebring, a sophomore from Pleasant Hill, had the second-fastest time in the Big West in the 1,500 this season after going 4:24.55 at the Stanford Invitational in April. She lowered that career-best mark a little further on Sunday, placing a close fourth in her section with a time of 4:23.75 which, depending on the rest of the conference performances this weekend, could place her atop the Big West.
Cridebring's mark also moves her from No. 5 to No. 4 on the Aggies' all-time leaders list. Oklahoma State's Kate Kujawa won the race in 4:22.60, leading a group of five runners separated by less than two seconds.
UC Davis will be back in action on Friday and Saturday with the Big West Mult-Event Championships, the prelude to the fuller Big West Championships on May 11-12. Both meets will be hosted by UC Irvine. Several Aggies will be in action this Saturday at the Sacramento State Open.
