Round One Results
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore
Matt Hansen shot a first-round score of 66 and is tied for second place after the first day of action on Friday at the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford at the Stanford Golf Course.
Hansen is tied with Oregon State's Nick Chianello and Oregon's Daniel Mernicki for second place as all three players are just one stroke off the leader, Fresno State's Rufie Fessler.
UC Davis is tied for 11th with Oregon State at seven over. Oregon leads the field at eight under and is five strokes ahead of second-place UCLA. USC is in third at one under.
Hansen opened play with a birdie on his first hole of the day, but fell to one over after back-to-back bogeys on holes 13 and 14. He closed his front nine, however, with two pars and two birdies to move back to one under.
His back nine was an impressive one as he alternated between birdie and par shots, hitting his third birdie in five holes on the par-4 fifth hole to move to four under. He settled for birdie on hole one, after an eagle attempt hung on the edge and he was forced to tap his ball in. He closed out with four straight pars.
The 66 tied a team season-low mark.
Mike Brockington finished at 3-over 73 to tie for 47th while Luke Vivolo and Matt Seramin each carded a 74 and are tied for 56th place. Josh Granger's 75 ties him for 69th overall.
After quickly moving to three over, Brockington got back on track with birdies on two of the last four holes of his front nine to improve to one over and carried that as he turned the corner. An unfortunate double bogey dropped him back to three over, but birdies on the fourth and seventh holes moved him back to two over. He'd finish with a 73, however, after bogeying his final hole of the day.
Seramin's first action of the spring season featured an eagle on the par-5 first hole. He also birdied on the par-3 third hole to finish at four over. Vivolo shot a steady front nine that featured six pars and a birdie, but fell to four over despite another two birdies on his back nine.
UC Davis will tee off on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will play alongside Fresno State and San Francisco.
