Aggies Rally Late In 11-7 Win At Bryant

March 27, 2012

Final Stats

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Junior attacker Elizabeth Datino scored three goals and three assists, mostly in her team's 5-0 finish, helping UC Davis overcome a second-half deficit to capture an 11-7 win over Bryant in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.

The Aggies improve to 5-4 for the year. The Bulldogs slip to 1-7 overall.

Datino, who leads all NCAA Division I players in points per game, contributed on four of UC Davis' five goals in the final 14 minutes of play. She assisted freshman Charlotte Morris to tie the contest at 7-7, later scored one of her own in the 51st minute to put the board at 9-7, then set up Elizabeth Landry and Morris for goals at the 7:05 and 1:25 marks.

Morris finished the game with two goals and an assist. In fact, with two from Morris, Landry and Sara Quero, plus a first-half goal by midfielder Allie Lehner, seven of the Aggies' 11 goals came from the sticks of their freshman class.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Majka posted eight saves against seven goals. She and junior Stephanie Guercio each had four ground balls while Guercio and Landry each earned three caused turnovers. Junior Anna Geissbuhler matched Datino's team-high three assists.

UC Davis jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the first 14 minutes of play, with Geissbuhler assisted on goals to Datino and Lehner. But the Bulldogs answered with five unanswered, including back-to-back by sophomore midfielder Lisa Vendel, to craft a 5-3 edge with eight minutes remaining before the break. Quero closed the gap with an unassisted goal in the final seconds, putting the halftime score at 5-4.

After Mary Green's goal extended the Bryant lead to two soon after the intermission, the Aggies netted two goals in the span of less than a minute to equalize at 6-6. Bulldog attacker Olivia McCarthy converted an assist from senior Lauren Sheridan to give her team a 7-6 lead, but that proved to be the last time Bryant altered the scoreboard in six shots down the stretch.

UC Davis fired five shots before Morris tied the game at 7-7 with 14:09 remaining, launching the 5-0 finish.

The Aggies outshot their hosts by a 37-22 margin and won 13 of the game's 20 draws. Ball control featured heavily in the second half, as UC Davis won 17 ground balls to Bryant's nine.

The Aggies finish their Spring Break road trip at Vermont on Thursday. Game time is noon Pacific.
