Crusaders Fend Off Late Aggie Surge

March 26, 2012

Final Stats

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Charlotte Morris scored four goals and junior Hannah Mirza added three goals and two assists, but UC Davis was unable to complete its second-half comeback in a 12-9 loss to Holy Cross in women's collegiate lacrosse action Monday afternoon.

The Aggies even their record to 4-4. The Crusaders move up to 5-5 overall.

Morris scored all four of her goals in the final 19 minutes of the game, helping UC Davis cut into a 9-3 deficit. Junior Anna Geissbuhler had a goal and three assists while attacker Elizabeth Datino posted a 1-2-3 offensive chart. Freshman Elizabeth Landry tallied four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper compiled a career-high 12 saves with two ground balls.

For Holy Cross, junior Taylor Zebrowski netted four goals with freshman Laura Ryan chipping in another three. Seton Hartnett tallied two goals and an assist for three points. Mary Klimasewiski recorded four draw controls, including three straight that helped the Crusaders craft its early lead.

Both teams traded two goals apiece in the first 6:32 of the contest. But the Crusaders shot 0-for-7 - four on saves by Majka - during the next 15 minutes. The Aggies fared little better, committing five turnovers and missing three shots during that same stretch.

Zebrowski hit an eight-meter shot to give HC a 3-2 lead, then a Klimasewiski draw control led to an immediate Laura Ryan goal on two straight possessions. Ryan completed her hat trick with just under a minute in the first period, helping the Crusaders hold a 7-2 halftime lead.

Holy Cross extended its advantage to 9-3 with its fifth eight-meter goal in the 40th minute. Then after shooting just 3-for-10 up to that point in the contest, the Aggies began their comeback effort. They shot 6-for-9 the rest of the way, reducing the deficit to just three goal with less than two minutes remaining. Landry won the ensuing draw and Mirza quickly fired off a shot, but Crusader goalkeeper Sarah Weber made the save. Zebrowski finished that possession with her fourth goal, bumping the HC lead back to four with 51 seconds remaining.

Another Landry draw control led to a Mirza-to-Morris goal at the 0:39 mark. UC Davis managed just one more possession on Majka's 12th save, but could not outduel the clock down the stretch.

UC Davis returns to action at Bryant on Tuesday. Game time is 1 p.m. Pacific.
