LONG BEACH, Calif. - The eighth-seeded UC Davis men's golf team closed out the final day at the Del Walker Match Play Championship with a 3-2 victory over host and No. 7 seed Long Beach State on Tuesday at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.
Freshman Mike Brockington concluded his spring debut with his third win of the tournament after defeating Philip Chian 5-and-4. Brockington led throughout the entire round, taking a 1-up lead immediately on the first hole after making par while Chian bogeyed. He moved to 3-up with a birdie on the par-4 13th hole followed by a par on the 14th hole.
Brockington took a 4-up lead with another par - his ninth of the round - on the third hole, then extended his lead to 5-up after parring the fourth hole. Another par on the very next hole kept him at 5-up and left Chian unable to catch him.
Freshman Luke Vivolo and sophomore Matt Hansen also picked up wins while Josh Granger was edged on the final hole of his match against Kevin Roy.
Vivolo fell to 2-down against Long Beach State's Xander Schauffele with a bogey on the par-4 13th hole, but a birdie on hole 14 followed by three straight pars moved him to 1-down after Schauffele bogeyed on the par-4 16th hole. Vivolo closed his front nine with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to turn the corner with the match at all square.
Vivolo continued to rally past Schauffele, parring the third hole to take a 1-up lead. Schauffele got the match back to all square with a par of his own on the fourth hole, but Vivolo regained the 1-up advantage as he made par while Schauffele bogeyed on the seventh hole. He finished the round with his 11th par of the day to claim the 2-up win.
Hansen never trailed in his 3-and-2 win over Kevin Lim, taking a 1-up lead with a birdie on his third hole of the day. He entered his back nine with the 1-up lead which he increased to 1-up with another birdie on hole one.
Hansen extended his lead to 3-up with a par shot on the third hole, which Lim bogeyed, then closed out the win by parring two of his next three holes.
Granger and Roy were all square through the first six holes until Granger took a 1-up lead with a birdie on the par-4 16th hole. The two went back and forth over the next seven holes, with Roy taking a 1-up lead on the sixth hole which he parred while Granger bogeyed.
Granger moved the match back to all square with a birdie, then both players parred to remain at all square. Roy edged out Granger for the 1-up victory on the final hole, hitting birdie while Granger made par.
UC Davis next competes at the Callaway Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego, Mar. 12-13 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
