Datino Scores Big Again In Lacrosse Slugfest

Feb. 23, 2012

Final Stats

MORAGA, Calif. - Junior low attacker Elizabeth Datino scored six goals with three assists while junior defender Vannessa Jamison picked up a school-record nine draw controls, helping UC Davis hold off Saint Mary's in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at SMC Recreation Field Thursday night.

The Aggies improve to 2-0 overall and in MPSF play. The Gaels, hosting their first night game in program history, fall to 0-2 for the year.

Datino's six goals tie a career high first set in back-to-back games against Detroit and Bryant in March of 2011. Freshmen Elizabeth Landry and Charlotte Morris added three and two goals, respectively. Jamison and Morris also provided two assists, while Jamison led UC Davis with three caused turnovers.

After spotting their hosts a 4-3 edge in the first 13 minutes of play, the Aggies scored five unanswered to claim an 8-4 lead. Datino tallied a goal, a draw control and two assists during that run. UC Davis held an 8-5 lead at halftime then saw the lead wither to one when Krista Morgan flipped an assist to Caroline Mahony in the 38th minute, putting the score at 10-9 in the Aggies' favor.

After Datino immediately answered with an eight-meter goal to make it 11-9, junior transfer Amanda Cross netted three straight to push SMC out to a 12-11 lead. Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Worsdale also figured heavily in the Gael comeback. She posted four of her 13 total saves in the span of two minutes while Cross converted her free-position chances on the other end of the field.

UC Davis regrouped to score five of the next six goals. Morris converted an eight-meter for the equalizer then Datino took advantage of a short-handed Saint Mary's defense, scoring unassisted for the go-ahead with 8:20 to go. Both a draw control and a key Jamison steal near the Gael restraining line allowed Datino to tack on two more goals down the stretch.

Cross ended up with a team-high five goals for SMC while Mahony added two.

The Aggies outshot the Gaels by a 33-27 margin, including 20-13 after the halftime break. UC Davis also won 21 draw controls.

UC Davis returns to action for a Southern road trip, taking on High Point, Davidson and Virginia Tech during a four-day span beginning on February 29.
