Aggies' 200 Corps Kicks Off UW Invitational

Jan. 27, 2012

SEATTLE, Wash. - School-record holder Melanise Chapman finished seventh in the 200-meter dash in 25.37 seconds while Leslie Reed tied her career-best with a mark of 25.50 as the Aggie duo led the UC Davis women's indoor track and field team during the first day of the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor on Friday evening.
The Aggies had nine competitors in the 200 which provided the only action for UC Davis on Friday. The remainder of the team's events will take place on Saturday.
Chapman, who set the indoor school record of 25.28 in 2010, opened her 2012 season with a top-10 finish and bested her top time from last year by nearly four-tenths of a second. Her heat was the event's fastest with the top three finishers all coming out of it, including NyEma Sims of Concordia University (Ore.) who grabbed top honors with a time of 24.29.
Reed had the Aggies' fastest mark in 2011 while also establishing a career-best mark of 25.50 which also came at the UW Invitational. She tied it at this year's meet, finishing third in her heat.
Sarah Griffith finished in the top half of the field, taking 17th in 25.84, Tonie Williams was 22nd overall in 25.88 and Ashley Marshall captured first in her heat, clocking 25.92 and placing 24th overall.
Janay Pierce (26.51) was 27th overall, Alana Babers (26.77) was 31st, Kayla Carter (26.91) was 34th and Kellie Grigg (26.93) crossed in 36th.
"Friday afternoon's 200 heats allowed us to get nine athletes on the track to start things off," said first-year coach Drew Wartenburg. "Melanise, running in the final heat, put a good finishing note on the afternoon with a significant improvement from a year ago. It was also exciting to have two freshmen (Griffith, Marshall) run good debut times."
The UW Invitational, featuring world class and top collegiate competition, swings into full action Saturday. The Aggies have 15 competitors in the meet, covering both running and field events.
The meet is the first indoor competition for the entire UC Davis squad this season.
