UC Davis 9, Cal Baptist 6

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Kevin Peat tallied 15 saves while Aaron Salit and redshirt freshman Chris Richardson each scored two goals, leading ninth-ranked UC Davis to a 9-6 win over No. 17 Cal Baptist in the first game of the three-day Aggie Shootout men's water polo tournament Friday night.

The Aggies improve to 9-3 for the season.

Salit scored both of his goals in the first half, helping UC Davis craft a 4-1 lead at the break. Richardson netted his in the second half, allowing the Aggies to hold off the Lancers' third-quarter charge. Anders MacCarthy and Luke Collins each had a goal and assist for UC Davis.

For CBU, senior Brent Troutman had four goals. He scored three of them - two on 6-on-5 chances - during the Lancers' four-goal third period. In his fourth overall goal, Troutman blasted a shot from two meters out to cut the Aggie lead to just 5-4 with 3:13 remaining in the third.

Aggie defender Stuart Dooley fed Collins for a goal on the next possession to bump UC Davis back to a two-goal margin, but Chris Toy and Kellan Falconieri combined on an identical play on the next trip down to bring the tally back to 6-5.

In the fourth, UC Davis scored three unanswered in a span of 1:44 to effectively seal the win. Senior Walter Eggert converted an exclusion opportunity at the 5:04 mark, junior Colin Hicks drew a five-meter foul then converted the penalty shot at 4:37, then Collins assisted Richardson on the Aggies' ninth goal with 3:40 remaining.

Peat was instrumental in helping hold CBU scoreless for 15 consecutive minutes early in the game. He posted six saves in the second period, including a pair on Lancer extra-man chances.

The Aggie Shootout, which consists mostly of Division III and NAIA programs, continues on Saturday and Sunday. UC Davis faces Chapman at 9:10 a.m. and Redlands at 12:40 on Saturday.
