EUGENE, Ore. - UC Davis freshman Nathan Strum moved within one race of the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships after qualifying for the 800-meter final on Friday afternoon at the USATF Junior Championships at the University of Oregon.
Strum, representing UC Davis, finished third in his prelim heat in 1 minutes, 52.48 seconds, advancing by time into Saturday's final which will be run at 5:10 p.m. The top two finishers in the final will earn spots on Team USA for the Pan American Championships next month in Florida.
First- and second-place finishers in each of Friday's three heats qualified for Saturday's championship race. Strum had the second-fastest time of the remaining competitors, earning a spot in the eight-person final.
"On paper it was going to be competitive to advance to the final," said Drew Wartenburg, assistant track and field coach. "Without a race since the conference final in mid-May we knew there would be some rust to shake off.
"Today, Nathan accomplished that and has a chance in a wide-open national final tomorrow."
Strum was third at this year's Big West Championships at UC Irvine and is ranked third all-time at UC Davis with a mark of 1:50.19. Assistant coach Kim Conley also competed in the 5,000 at the USATF Senior Championships. She finished 10th as an unattached competitor with a time of 15:38.13.
