STILLWATER, Okla. - UC Davis freshman Matt Hansen shot a 1-over 73 during the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships and is tied for 34th place after Tuesday's competition.

Hansen, UC Davis' first men's golfer to advance to the Div. I national championship, is one of six individuals competing alongside 30 teams at the tournament which is being held at the 7,416 yard, par-72 Karsten Creek Golf Course.

"Matt played great," said head coach Cy Williams. "Tee to green, he was probably better than a tour pro. His putting speed wasn't quite as sharp as it could be, but he was very close to shooting three or four under par today. It was pretty impressive to watch."

Hansen is among 13 players tied for 34th after opening the 54-hole tournament with a 73. The group is six shots off the pace being set by James White of Georgia Tech, who leads the field after shooting a 5-under 67.

The Big West Freshman of the Year opened the tournament with a birdie on his first hole of the day, the par-4 tenth, but a double bogey on the par-4 13th put Hansen at 1-over. He bogeyed again on the par-3 15th, but rallied with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes.

Hansen closed his first round by shooting par on all nine holes of his back nine.

Georgia Tech owns an early three-shot lead over UCLA in the team standings after firing a 5-under 283 team score. UCLA is second at 2-under 286 while Alabama shot an even 288 to place third.

The tournament continues Wednesday with Hansen teeing off at 2:20 p.m. (Central).
