UC Davis Announces Men's Basketball Coaching Change

March 30, 2011

DAVIS, Calif. - After eight seasons as UC Davis men's basketball coach, Gary Stewart will transition into a new set of administrative responsibilities within the athletics department, Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka announced on Wednesday.

Stewart will take on a number of assignments within the department through June 30 as Special Project Administrator, and will work with senior level administrators on assigned projects deemed necessary and appropriate to assist in the advancement of the athletics program.

"After a number of recent conversations and meetings, Coach Stewart and I have come to a mutual decision that will benefit both Gary and the athletics department at UC Davis," Warzecka said.

Stewart said the time is right for a professional change.

"I have had a wonderful experience coaching basketball at UC Davis," Stewart said. "I truly believe the timing is right for me and the timing is right for the basketball program. We have some talented student-athletes in the program and I am enthusiastically looking forward to watching their continued growth and development."

Stewart will also continue as a lecturer in the Physical Education Program.

"We greatly appreciate Gary's service to the athletics department and the university, and for helping guide our men's basketball program through a challenging transition to NCAA Division I," Warzecka said. "Gary is a valued member of this department and he has made significant contributions over the last eight years. I look forward to working with him to further advance the UC Davis athletics program."

Stewart compiled an 88-148 overall record during his tenure with the Aggies and was 21-43 in four seasons of Big West Conference competition. UC Davis finished the 2010-11 season with a 10-20 overall record and was 4-12 in league play.

Warzecka said a nationwide search for a new men's basketball coach will begin immediately.
