March 22, 2011

Final Stats

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Senior Christina Corsa tallied five goals and three assists while Gina Hoffmire, Vannessa Jamison and Anna Geissbuhler also performed hat tricks, sparking UC Davis to a 19-4 win over Wagner in women's collegiate lacrosse action at College Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Aggies, winners of seven straight, improve to 7-1 for the season. The Seahawks slip to 1-6. Tuesday's win marks the sixth occasion on which UC Davis has scored 19 or more goals in a game in 2011. The Aggies lead all Division I teams in scoring offense.

Corsa scored three goals in the first half, helping her team craft an 11-2 lead at the break, then added two goals and two assists in the second period. Hoffmire chipped in four goals and an assist, while Jamison and Geissbuhler each posted 3-1-4 offensive charts. Sophomore Hannah Mirza scored two goals and won six draw controls, continuing her school record-breaking pace in the latter category.

The Aggies dominated the Seahawks in shots (35-11), ground balls (19-11) and draw controls (17-8) in a game in which they never surrendered the lead. Mirza scored two goals and Geissbuhler had a goal and assist in a run of six unanswered goals during the first 6:28 of play. Wagner junior Denieda McCullough assisted Lauren Petrik on her team's first goal in the eighth minute, then Petrik set up McCullough with a goal at the 15:05 mark to close the gap to 7-2. However, UC Davis never allowed its host any closer in the contest: Corsa scored four goals in a 7-0 stretch to stretch the margin to 14-2 with 22:36 remaining in the second.

Geissbuhler converted assists from Corsa and Kristi Irgens to spark a 4-0 run down the final stretch of the game. The Seahawks managed only one shot in the final 13 minutes of the game, a Sam Morin attempt that struck the cage.

The Aggies, who raised their scoring average to 18.25 goals per game, continue their Spring Break road trip with a game at Iona at noon Pacific on Wednesday.
