WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - Tyler Raber shot an impressive 4-under 67 in the final round to finish tied for third overall at 3-under, leading the UC Davis men's golf team to a fifth-place finish Tuesday at the USC Collegiate Invitational.
After a late start Monday, play was suspended in the middle of the second round due to darkness and with Tuesday's 7:30 a.m. also delayed, teams began play at 9 a.m., finishing the remaining 28-30 holes of the 54-hole event.
The Aggies finished at 15-over 867, defeating four teams ranked in the top-25 nationally, including No. 18 San Diego, No. 21 Cal, No. 23 and host USC and No. 24 Washington. UC Davis finished four strokes back of 17th-ranked Stanford who was fourth at 11-over.
San Diego State won the team title at 2-under while top-ranked UCLA was second, shooting even, and Oregon finished third at 9-over.
Raber tied for third with San Diego State's John Carlsson. UCLA's Patrick Cantlay won medalist honors, finishing at 6-under.
Raber shot a 1-under 70 in his first round that was highlighted by an eagle on his second hole and birdies on the tenth and 11th holes. Upon completion of his second round, Raber was at 2-over, but rebounded in his third round with five birdies and 12 pars. He opened with a birdie on the seventh, then followed that with birdies on three of his next four holes.
Daniel Covrig finished tied for 24th at 4-over 217, Austin Graham tied for 40th at 8-over, Andrew Haggen tied for 44th at 9-over and Josh Granger finished at 12-over to tie for 51st.
After shooting a 73 in the first round, Covrig started his second round with two birdies, an eagle on the par-15 12th hole and five straight pars through his front nine. He improved on his first round score by six strokes for a 4-under 67 before finishing at 6-over for the tournament.
Graham eagled during his first round as well, finishing at 1-over before moving to 3-over after two rounds. Graham's final round was highlighted by 14 pars. Haggen opened his second round with an eagle, while Granger shot even on eight-of-nine holes to start his third round.
UC Davis is off from competition until Mar. 21-22 when the Aggies compete at the Oregon Duck Invitational, hosted by Oregon.
