Aggies Tame Bulldogs In Dominating MPSF Win

Feb. 19, 2011

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Gina Hoffmire and sophomore Anna Geissbuhler each scored five goals to lead UC Davis to a 21-5 win over Fresno State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The victory evens the Aggies at 1-1, both overall and in conference. The Bulldogs slip to 0-2 for the season and in MPSF play.

Hoffmire and Geissbuhler were among five UC Davis players with multiple goals. Senior Christina Corsa and sophomore Hannah Mirza each tallied hat tricks, while sophomore Elizabeth Datino added two goals and two assists. Hoffmire and defender Vannessa Jamison matched Datino's assists total as well.

For Fresno State, freshman midfielder Rachel Minarovich scored three goals while sophomore Amanda Cross chipped two goals and an assist.

The Aggies never trailed in the game, drawing first blood on Corsa's successful eight-meter attempt just 71 seconds into the game. The Bulldogs equalized when Natalie Harrington grabbed the next draw and Cross finished the drive, but Hoffmire had three goals and an assist in a run of five unanswered for UC Davis during the subsequent eight minutes. Corsa provided another goal and assist, each igniting 3-0 runs for the Aggies, sending her team to the break with an 11-3 lead.

Geissbuhler punched in three goals after the break, including two in a 7-0 finish to the game. Overall, UC Davis outshot its guest by a 45-6 margin, broke nine of Fresno State's 24 clear attempts and committed 12 fewer turnovers (18-to-30). The Bulldogs, for their part, managed to hit 5 of 6 in the shooting column, including 2-for-2 on eight-meter attempts. In comparison, the Aggies managed only 3-for-11 in free-position opportunities.

Jamison, a returning all-conference defender, paced all players with five cased turnovers while matching freshman Meghan Jordan with four draw controls.

Cross and Marinovich led Fresno State in the field as well as the scoring column. Cross had three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls. Marinovich picked up three of her team's 11 won draws.

UC Davis returns to action on February 25 for a non-conference tilt with MPSF member Saint Mary's. Game time is 3 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
