NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - Tyler Raber carded five birdies en route to a first-round 68 and is tied for fifth and the UC Davis men's golf team finished the first round of the Battle at the Beach tied for seventh at the Pelican Hill Golf Course Sunday.
The Aggies, ranked 48th nationally by Golfstat, shot a collective 5-over 355 on the day to tie for seventh with Tennessee and lead 10th-ranked San Diego State who is ninth (362) and No. 36 Oregon State who is tenth (365). UC Davis is two strokes behind UCLA and Arkansas who are tied for fifth. San Diego leads the field with a 2-under 348 while defending national champion Augusta State is in second at an even 350. Arizona State and Washington are tied for third at one over.
Freshman Matt Seramin shot an even 70, his lowest round of the season, and is tied for 15th while senior Austin Graham and sophomore Andrew Haggen each shot 71 to tie for 27th overall. Josh Granger rounded out the Aggie scoring with a 75. Daniel Covrig, competing as an individual, finished with a 76.
Raber quickly moved to 3-under after birdies on the third, fourth and fifth holes and stayed even through the next five holes. The junior then got to five under with birdies on the par-4 11th and par-4 14th, but a bogey on the 15th and a double bogey on the 17th resulted in his final score of 2-under 68.
Seramin's first round was highlighted by two birdies and six pars on his front nine. Despite starting his back nine with three bogeys, the freshman got back to even with four straight pars and concluded his first day with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
Haggen's front nine featured an eagle on the par-5 eighth while Graham carded five birdies as each finished at 1-over 71 on the day. In his first tournament since Sept. 26-27, Granger carded two birdies and parred on five holes throughout his back nine to finish at five over while Covrig fell to four over early on before finishing at 6-over 76.
The tournament continues Monday with UC Davis playing alongside Tennessee beginning at 8:30 a.m.
