BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis sophomore Elizabeth Datino and Cal sophomore Megan Takacs each scored four goals, but the Golden Bears held off two late Aggie comebacks en route to a 15-11 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Witter Rugby Field Sunday afternoon.
UC Davis opens its 2011 season at 0-1, both overall and in conference. Cal, which took a 20-6 loss to Notre Dame two days earlier, evens its overall mark to 1-1 and moves to 1-0 in MPSF play.
Datino shot a perfect 4-for-4 for the day, while teammate Gina Hoffmire provided three goals and an assist for the Aggies. Senior Christina Corsa, sophomore Anna Geissbuhler and freshman Meghan Jordan each tallied a goal and assist. Geissbuhler also scooped up three draw controls for UC Davis, matching Stephanie Guercio for the team high.
For Cal, midfielder Vail Horn performed a hat trick in support of Takacs. Senior Chapin Jackson and sophomore Gina Holslag each earned two goals and two assists, while Amelia Burke nabbed six draw controls.
The Aggies managed to rally back to a tie game on five different occasions but never could take a lead at any point. Corsa and Hoffmire hit consecutive goals to erase a 2-0 Golden Bear start, then Datino hit back-to-back scores to even the tally at 4-4 later in the first period. Horn's goal with 4:55 remaining gave Cal a 5-4 lead at halftime, but Datino converted an eight-meter opportunity 92 ticks into the second half to equalize at 5-5.
Less than a minute after Holslag's goal restored the Golden Bear lead to one, Geissbuhler won the ensuing draw then Jordan assisted Mirza for UC Davis' sixth goal in the 34th minute to knot the score at 6-6. Arolla netted her eight-meter chance at the 37:01 mark but the Aggies again answered. Hoffmire won the next draw and Jordan scored unassisted to tie the game at 7-7.
However, Cal stormed ahead through the heart of the second half, scoring six of the next seven for a 13-8 lead. Takacs planted three of her goals in that stretch, while the Aggies only managed two shots in the 15-minute span -- both of which were stopped by Golden Bear goalkeeper Allie Shropshire.
Hoffmire scored goals at the 54th and 56th minute, the second of which came from a Geissbuhler assist Geissbuhler than tacked on a goal of her own, converting a pass from Corsa to trim the Cal lead to just 13-11. UC Davis won two draws down the stretch and fired a pair of shots in an effort to stage yet another comeback effort, but never added to its scoring tally. Jackson hit insurance goals with 2:21 and 0:17 left to effectively seal the win for the Bears.
Cal managed two more shots and two more draw controls than its guest, while UC Davis committed fewer turnovers (12-17) and was slightly more efficient at clearing the midfield at a 15-for-17 success rate. In the end, the Bears shot .556 to the Aggies .440.
UC Davis returns to action for its home opener against Fresno State on Saturday. The opening draw at Aggie Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
