LA QUINTA, Calif. - Matt Hansen had five birdies, four of which came on the front nine, and leads the UC Davis men's golf team after the first round of action at The Prestige at PGA WEST on the Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.
The Aggies, who are co-hosting the 16-team tournament with Stanford, are tied for 12th with Northwestern and shot a 7-over 295 as a team.
Oregon leads the field with a 1-stroke lead over Stanford and Washington, finishing at 9-over for the day. San Francisco and Arizona State are only two strokes back and are tied for fourth with a 6-under 282.
Hansen carded five birdies for a 1-under 71, tying him for 18th overall. After shooting even on his first three holes, he finished at 2 over before heading into his back nine where he birdied four holes to get back to 2-under. A bogey on the par-4 ninth hole gave him a 1-under for the round.
Josh Granger had two birdies and two bogeys on his front nine to finish even, then maintained a steady back nine, shooting par on all but two holes. He finished even on the day.
Andrew Haggen and Matt Seramin are tied for 64th at 4-over 76. Haggen's first round was highlighted by two birdies while Seramin shot par on 12 holes.
Freshmen Luke Vivolo and Jonny Baxter tied for 72nd in their UC Davis debuts. Vivolo had a birdie on the par-5 12th hole and shot par on 11 holes while Baxter, competing as an individual, birdied on the par-3 seventh and the par-4 11th holes.
Arizona State's Spencer Fletcher and Stanford's Andrew Yun are tied at the top of the leader board at 6-under 66 while Adam Hofmann of Vanderbilt is only one shot off the lead in third.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday. The second round begins with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start.
