LOS ANGELES - Freshman Mark Menis and senior Edgaras Asajavicius each scored two goals to boost No. 10 Loyola Marymount to an 8-5 win over No. 12 UC Davis in the battle of the top two preseason Western Water Polo Association picks at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies fall to 20-9 overall and 11-4 in conference games. The Lions, four-time defending WWPA champions, improve to 13-6 for the year and 9-1 in league play.
Junior Colin Hicks scored three goals to lead UC Davis, while Aaron Salit and Matt Vowell each added one. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Peat posted eight saves in the cage.
Salit's natural goal at the 6:13 mark drew first blood in favor of the Aggies, but LMU answered with two 6-on-5 goals in a 3-0 run to grab the advantage. Hicks netted a goal to cut the lead to 3-2 with 19 seconds left in the first, but Menis had both of his goals in a 3-0 Lion second quarter. Meanwhile, UC Davis failed to convert three extra-man opportunities in heading to the halftime break, trailing 6-2.
Hicks scored his second goal early in the third period, Vowell fired in a shot with 1:37 in that frame, then Hicks converted an exclusion chance in the final seconds of the fourth, but the Aggies never approached by closer than three goals in the contest.
Saturday's contest represents the last conference game before UC Davis enters the WWPA tournament. The Aggies returns to action on November 12, hosting California for their home finale.
