AUBURN, Wash. - UC Davis freshman Matt Hansen, playing in his first collegiate event, shot a 3-under 69 in Monday's first round of the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at the University of Washington and is tied for second after 36 holes.

The Aggie men's golf team opened its season with a par-288 in the morning before shooting 302 in the afternoon and are in 10th place at the tournament being contested at Washington National Golf Club.

Junior Tyler Raber, who had a 70 in the first round, is tied for 28th at 4-over, Josh Granger opened with a 74 and is tied for 35th at 5-over 149, senior Austin Graham is tied for 57th at 153 and Andrew Haggen is tied for 60th at 154.

Pepperdine, ranked 34th, blistered the course for a 12-under 276 in the second round to counter its 2-over 290 in the first and assume an eight-shot lead over fifth-ranked Washington (574) at 10-under 566. San Diego State, ranked 30th, is in third at 576 while Missouri (579) and top-ranked Oregon (586) round out the top five.

UC Davis is just four shots out of the top five at 590 with Pacific (587), No. 3 Texas A&M (588), No. 21 Oregon State (589) and Idaho (589) right ahead of the Aggies.

Hansen, from Morro Bay High School on California's Central Coast, posted a birdie on his first collegiate hole, the par-4 10th. He added two more birdies to go with six pars on his front nine, making the turn three under. He played his final nine holes even to card an impressive 69.

Three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars filled his second-round 72. Hansen's tied for second with Jace Long of Missouri and Andrew Widmar of Pepperdine - one of three Waves among the top five places - three shots behind Pepperdine's Josh Anderson who is six under.

Raber, who captured the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational last season, started strong as well, making his turn even after two birdies and two bogeys, and then picking up two more red numbers on his back nine to finish with a 70. He had 76 in the afternoon.

Granger had four combined birdies in his rounds of 74 and 75, Graham had six while shooting 75 and 78, and Haggen had 27 pars while firing a pair of 77's.

The tournament's final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning.
