SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - UC Davis field hockey took their first win of the season in dramatic fashion vs. Missouri State, when Amanda Marinac scored a golden goal in the 99th minute of overtime for a 2-1 win Wednesday at the Plaster Sports Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
The win for UC Davis snaps an 18 game losing streak, dating back to Sept. 5, 2009. For the 2010 season, the Aggies improved to 1-3, while the Bears dropped to 2-4.
Missouri State held the advantage in shots during the first half, but UC Davis capitalized on their one opportunity in the first frame. The Bears attacked with eight shots in the opening 35 minutes, with Christina Schmidt scoring the first goal of the game in the eighth minute of play.
The Aggies bounced back with a goal of their own in the 14th minute of play, thanks to Nadia Namdari's second goal of the season. UC Davis had two penalty corners in the remainder of the first half, but couldn't take advantage, keeping the score deadlocked at 1-1 for the intermission.
In the second half, UC Davis had three shots on goal and three penalty corners near the end of regulation, but couldn't convert on a goal. The Bears had their fair share of opportunities as well, but the score remained 1-1 through the end of regulation.
Missouri State was the aggressor to start the first overtime, rattling off eight unanswered shots. The Aggies managed to survive into the second overtime, where the Bears posted another three shots and three corners. UC Davis finally broke free for one final chance during the last minute of the match. Marinac took advantage, using a pass from Lydia Brambila to send in a goal to the right corner and make the Aggies 2-1 winners.
Lauren Sawvelle carried the defense for UC Davis, recording 15 saves in goal for the game. For Missouri State, Steph Anderson had five saves in goal.
"Today the players encountered something new that I believe will add tremendously to the Aggies in years to come," said head coach Vianney Campos. "In our first trip of the season, we faced unexpected changes in weather conditions during play that forced us out of our element. Regardless, we kept our composure and found a way to finish in double OT, earning our first win and giving us some much needed momentum."
"I'm excited for and very proud of the players for fighting through this challenge," continued Campos. "They overcame this bump in our young season and I know this will only help us gain more experience."
UC Davis will stay in Missouri for a pair of weekend games, starting with Saint Louis on Friday Sept. 17 at 11 a.m.
