NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Anikia Jackson finished second in the shot put and third in the 100-meter hurdles to help spark her first-day 2,986 heptathlon points on Friday at the Big West Multi Championships at Cal State Northridge, while Will Guthrie had 3,452 points and is in eighth place in the decathlon.

Jackson, who placed fifth at last year's championship, is in third heading into Saturday's final day, trailing only Barbara Nwaba (3,420 pts) of UC Santa Barbara and Desirae Gonder (3,329) of Cal State Northridge. She leads Shelese Ruffin of Northridge by just five points.

Guthrie, who had a pair of sixth-place performances in the 100-meter dash and the long jump, is eight points in front of Jordan Goffena (3,444) of Cal Poly and only 16 back of seventh-place Owen Morse (3,468) of Northridge.

The host Matadors' Robert Robinson scored 4,070 points during the decathlon's first five events and owns a 330-point lead for first place over Nicholas Armstrong of Long Beach State (3,740).

Jackson, a former California Community College state champion while at Bakersfield College, picked up her highest point total on Friday in the hurdles, the meet's first event. She was third in a career-best 14.45 seconds, a mark that jumps her to fourth on the Aggies' career leaders' list.

Jackson had her best placing in the shot put where she was second with a mark of 36 feet, 5.75 inches, tallying her 603 points. The heptathlon concludes on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800. Jackson went 19-5.25 in the long jump last week at Stanford, debuting her on the program's top-10 list.

Guthrie was seventh during his inaugural Big West Multi appearance last season, scoring a career-high 6,158 points. His 3,452 points are only slightly behind the 3,477 he had at the midway point last year, giving him a good opportunity for a personal-best total on Saturday.

Guthrie had his best finishes on Friday in both the 100 and the long jump. He opened with a sixth-place showing in the 100, going 11.45 seconds to score 763 points, and then went a wind-aided 20-11.75 in the long jump for another sixth place and scoring 673 points.

The decathlon will finish on Saturday with the 110 high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.

Finishes from both the heptathlon and decathlon will provide early scoring for the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships which will be held next weekend, also at Cal State Northridge.
