AUSTIN, Texas - A total of four UC Davis men and three women were in action in Thursday's first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Track and Field West Regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The men's shot put and women's 10,000 had trips to the NCAA Finals on the line as the regional got underway in the heat of central Texas.
Three Aggie men raced in prelims with two-time Big West champion Thomas Phillips finishing 32nd in the 400 with a 47.40. It was his third-fastest time of the year. Jonathan Sees posted a 3:56.71 in the 1500. In the 400, Alex Wilright, who is coming off an injury, ran a 52:05 to finish fourth in his heat and just one spot off from advancing to Friday's quarterfinals. It was Wilright's first race in nearly six weeks.
Also on Thursday, Lauren Wallace placed 33rd in the 800 prelims with a 2:10.53. The final race of the night featuring Aggies was the women's 10,000 with the top-12 earning a spot in the NCAA Finals. Kaitlin Gregg placed 19th with a 35:12.18 while Sarah Sumpter was 31st with 36:09.09.
Six more Aggies are scheduled to compete Friday. On the men's side, Michael Peterson (Pole Vault) and Polly Gnepa (110HH) will be in action. Ashley Hearn (Discus), Sirena Williams (100H), Caitlin Fitzgerald (3,000 Steeplechase) and Alison Stoakley (3,000 Steeplechase) will compete on the women's side.
