DAVIS, Calif. - Scott Lyman recorded four hits and six RBI and hit a three-run home run in the top of seventh inning to lead UC Davis in an 11-6 comeback victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The win clinched the series for UC Davis and the Aggies are now 24-27 overall and 7-13 in Big West action. The Gauchos drop to 21-28 on the year and also own a 7-13 conference record.
Scott Heinig earned the win as he recorded two strikeouts and held the Gauchos hitless in 3.2 innings of work. The senior is now 2-1 on the year.
Justin Schafer put UC Davis on the scoreboard first as he scored off an RBI single from Lyman after leading off with his own single, then stealing second base. The Gauchos, however, scored the equalizer in the very next frame when Gunner Terhune scored on Matt Valaika's groundout to first base.
UC Santa Barbara then took a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Mark Haddow led off with a double, then stole third before scoring despite a double play that was turned by UC Davis. With two outs and a runner on third, Doug Hansen singled to bring home Sean Williams.
Entering the fifth inning, UCSB owned a 4-2 lead, but the Aggies tied the score at four runs apiece after Seth Batty and Scott Heylman each scored a run for UC Davis. Batty led off the inning with a single, then moved to second on a ground out by Schafer before scoring on an RBI single by David Popkins. Heylman was hit by a pitch to reach first base and advanced to third base on Popkins' single before coming home on Lyman's base hit to left field with two outs.
The Gauchos would break the tie in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of the own, highlighted by Doug Hansen's leadoff triple. Hansen would score on an RBI base hit from Terhune. After throwing out Terhune as he attempted to steal second, Aggie starting pitcher Sean Watson walked back-to-back Gaucho batters and was replaced by Heinig. Heinig walked the first batter he faced to load the bases with only one out and the Gauchos would score their second run of the inning as Derek Eligio scored off Mark Haddow's fielder's choice to put UC Santa Barbara up 6-4.
UC Davis took the lead back for good in the seventh inning. After Schafer popped up for the first out of the inning, Heylman and Popkins hit back-to-back singles to set up Lyman's three-run shot to right center field, giving the Aggies a 7-6 lead.
Heinig retired the side in the seventh and the Aggies put up another run in the eighth when Eric Johnson led off with a double, then moved to third on a single by Batty before scoring on an error by Williams at second base.
UC Davis sealed the win with three more runs in the ninth inning. Popkins started the Aggies off with a single, then pinch runner Daniel Cepin advanced to second when a balk was called on Gaucho reliever Nick Loredo. Cepin would score from second on Lyman's fourth hit of the day. Lyman would come home on a single by Johnson before Batty's ground out to first base allowed Kyle Mihaylo to score.
Freshman CJ Blom entered in the bottom of the ninth to replace Heinig and retired the side to preserve UC Davis' 11-6 win.
