BREMERTON, Wash. -- UC Davis junior Austin Graham shot a 3-over 75 during the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf West Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Club and is tied for 31st place after Thursday's rain-delayed competition.
Graham is one of 10 individuals competing alongside 13 teams at the tournament which is being contested on the 7,104-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. The start of play on Thursday was delayed by 90 minutes due to heavy rains.
The top five teams, and the highest-placing individual not one of those teams, will qualify for the NCAA Finals in Tennessee next month.
Graham is among 10 players tied for 31st after opening the 54-tournament with a 75. The group is six shots off the pace being set by Dustin Morris of Colorado State and Espen Kofstad of Denver who each shot 3-under 69. Three players, including Darren Wallace of host Washington, are a shot back. There are 75 players in the field.
Graham, an all-conference first-team pick this season, is playing in the regional for the second consecutive year but the first time as an individual. He is also in his first competition since April after missing the Big West Conference Championship for health reasons.
Washington took an early five-shot lead over Colorado State and Oregon State in the team standings after firing a 2-under 286 team score. Illinois is in fourth, seven shots behind the Huskies, while San Diego is at 6-over 294 and in fifth place.
The tournament continues with the second round on Friday morning.
