Final Stats
DENVER, Colo. - Senior defender Molly Peterson scored a team-high four goals but UC Davis was unable to overcome a 43-16 shooting margin, falling by a 17-7 final to Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse game at Peter Barton Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Aggies fall to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in conference games. The Pioneers improve to 9-4 for the year, with a 3-0 MPSF record. They take sole possession of first place in the league, breaking loose from the three-way tie with UC Davis and Stanford.
Freshman Elizabeth Datino and juniors Christina Corsa and Gina Hoffmire each tallied one goal for the Aggies. Senior Molly Lapolla provided two assists, while Corsa, Anna Geissbuhler and Vannessa Jamison tallied one apiece.
For DU, senior Ali Flury netted five goals, with Tulley Stapp and Kara Secora also performing hat tricks. Lexi Sanders, also a senior midfielder, earned four assists to lead the Pioneers.
Denver took an immediate lead in the game, with Kaiti Delaney scoring a second-chance goal just 1:04 after the initial draw and Tulley Stapp converting an eight-meter shot less than three minutes later. But UC Davis was able to equalize relatively quickly. A Jamison steal in the Pioneers' attacking third led to Hoffmire's lone goal of the game. Then Corsa, who earned the free position and assisted Hoffmire on that score, won the ensuing draw to allow Peterson to tie the game in the eighth minute.
However, Denver scored five unanswered to capture the lead for good. Flury completed her hat trick with 5:07 remaining in the first half, sending the Pioneers to the break with a 9-4 lead. Geissbuhler assisted Peterson on a goal in the 33rd minute the reduce the deficit to four, but Secora promptly countered with a goal to ignite a run of six straight for the Pioneers. Datino broke the Aggie scoreless stretch with a goal at the 14:56 mark, but Melissa Maier hit an eight-meter attempt to restore the DU lead back to 10.
In addition to holding the edge in total shots, the Pioneers outdrew their guest by a 17-7 advantage. UC Davis also struggled to just 1-for-6 from the eight-meter arc.
The Aggies complete their Colorado road trip with a non-conference game at Regis on Saturday. Game time is noon MDT.
