PHILADELPHIA - Junior Gina Hoffmire scored a career-high seven goals, including the winner with 37 seconds remaining in the second sudden-death overtime period, to lead UC Davis to a 14-13 win over Temple in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action at Geasey Field Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 3-1 for the season.
Senior defender Molly Peterson tallied two goals and one assist, while five other UC Davis players contributed one goal each. For the Owls, sophomore Karly Cohen shot 5-for-7, including a goal with 2:49 left in regulation that forced the extra frames.
The Aggies captured the win despite an 8-7 halftime deficit and being outshot 37-to-28 for the game. Temple also outdrew its guests by a 17-15 margin and won nine more ground balls (25-16). The Owl lead widened to 10-7 early in the second period, but goals by Hoffmire and Peterson put the deficit back to one.
With less than nine minutes left in the second half, freshman Elizabeth Datino converted an assist from Peterson to tie the game at 11-11. After Temple's Shelby Christopher caromed off the post, Hoffmire won the rebound, leading to a goal by Aggie junior Laura Martin. UC Davis protected its cage from four Owl shots before an Ann Stouffer steal led to Cohen's equalizer.
Hoffmire scored in the first three-minute overtime to push the Aggies back to the lead, but Temple's Melissa Schweitzer netted a goal within the opening ticks of the second overtime. Neither team managed to score again, although Aggie junior Christina Corsa managed a final effort with five seconds left. But Owl goalie Tess Bishop was there for the save.
Both squads battled to three scoreless minutes in the first sudden-death period, and Bishop stopped Aggie Hannah Mirza early in the second. With 1:40 left, UC Davis freshman Molly Carstensen picked Stouffer for a caused turnover, then drew a foul. The Aggies completed the clear attempt, allowing Hoffmire to hit her game-winner with less than a minute remaining.
UC Davis completes its three-game road swing at Manhattan College on Monday.
