Stanford Opener schedule

CHICO, Calif. - Amanda Stevens finished second in the 800-meter run and tied for third in the 200 while on her way to a fifth-place finish in the hepthalon at the Chico Multi, hosted by Chico State on Thursday and Friday.

Stevens, competing in her first multi-event competition, scored 3,461 points, finishing in front of six other competitors. UC Davis also had two decathletes competing in the two-day meet with Will Guthrie scoring 5,044 points in eight events before withdrawing, and Robert Neely scoring 4,462 points in seven.

Chico State's Kelly Clancey won the heptathlon with 4,743 points while the Wildcats' Talor Fulfer scored 6,617 to capture the top flight of the decathlon.

Stevens highlighted her inaugural competition with strong finishes to both days. On Thursday, she tied for third in the 200 in 26.94 seconds before ending the meet with a time of 2:24.13 in the 800, good enough for second place and a personal-best 768 points.

Guthrie, who had a career-best 6,138 points in the decathlon at last year's Big West Conference Championships, had a trio of second-place performances and a third place over his eight events. He was second in the 100 (11.41), 400 (51.85) and 110 high hurdles (15.81) while earning third in the long jump (21-10.75).

Neely, who had 6,030 points at the conference meet last year, also had a strong showing at Chico, winning three events and finishing fourth in one more. He opened the competition with wins in the 100 (11.24) and long jump (22-1.75) before beginning Friday's portion by taking the hurdles (15.71).

The Chico Multi kicked off the outdoor portion of the UC Davis track and field season. The Aggie men's and women's teams, who finished second and fifth, respectively, at last year's Big West Conference Championships, will send the bulk of their teams to Saturday's Stanford Opener.

The meet is an annual opener between the Aggies, Cardinal, Cal and Fresno State with hosting duties rotating among the schools each year. In addition to that quartet, Cal Poly and San Francisco will also compete at this year's meet which will be held at Cobb Track and Angell Field at Stanford.

Besides the team, unattached and club athletes will also compete in the meet.

The running events open with the 2,000-meter steeplechase while the field eventsstart at noon with the hammer throw. The 4x400 relays will cap the day, beginning at 2;55 p.m.

"It's going to be a good chance for teams to come together," said women's coach Deanne Vochatzer. "I think everybody is pretty much training through this meet but looking very much to seeing where we're at in our outdoor regular events."

The meet begins a busy month for UC Davis which will host two consecutive meets on Mar. 13 (Aggie Open) and 20 (UC Davis Classic), the latter added after Sacramento State was unable to host their annual meet due to installation of artificial turf at their facility.
