Wildcats Hold Off Aggies' Second-Half Rally

March 4, 2010

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Despite hat tricks by Aggie seniors Molly Lapolla and Britt Farquharson and freshman Hannah Mirza, Wildcat sophomore Justnie Donodeo scored a game-high four goals to help Villanova hang on to a 13-12 win over UC Davis in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies suffer their first loss of the year, falling to 2-1 overall. The 'Cats remain undefeated with a 3-0 season mark.

Mirza supplemented her three goals with an assist and two ground balls to lead UC Davis. Lapolla also had three goals while winning three draw controls. Junior Gina Hoffmire added two goals and an assist for the Aggies, who rallied back from a 9-4 halftime deficit to pull within a goal at the end.

Donodeo hit two goals in the opening two minutes as part of a 5-0 VU start. Mirza scored a goal to put UC Davis on the board in the ninth minute, but Maria Bowman added two more to help the Wildcats craft their five-goal halftime advantage.

Lapolla scored a goal with 11 seconds remaining in the first half, then opened the second half by converting an assist from Christina Corsa just 15 ticks after the break. Farquharson and Lapolla then tacked on back-to-back scores to trim the VU lead to just 9-7 after 33 minutes of play.

However, Donodeo responded with a successful eight-meter attempt at the 33:53 mark in the game, igniting a 3-0 Wildcat run that restored the lead to five.

Farquharson had her remaining two goals as part of a 5-1 UC Davis finish in the game. She converted an eight-meter shot with 1:46 remaining to bring the tally to 13-12, then a VU turnover gave the Aggies one final chance to tie the game. Corsa was able to fire off a shot, but Wildcat goalie Amanda Hirschfeld was there for the save. VU cleared the ball to its attacking third and effectively ran out the final 90 seconds of play.

UC Davis continues its three-game road swing with a game at Temple on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. Eastern.
