S.F. State Distance Carnival Results

STANFORD, Calif. - Jonathan Peterson set a UC Davis school record in the 5,000-meter run on Friday night at the Stanford Invitational, finishing second in his heat with a time of 14 minutes, 9.23 seconds and highlighting a strong day for UC Davis distance runners in the Bay Area.

Peterson, who led for most of the race according to Aggie distance coach Drew Wartenburg, finished second in his heat to Jesse Luciano of Iowa who edged him in 14:08.71.

Peterson's mark broke the previous school record of 14:13.95 set by Mark McManus in 1997 and bettered his PR by more than 11 seconds. He entered the meet ranked fifth on the Aggies' all-time list.

UC Davis had distance runners in competition both at Stanford and San Francisco State on Friday with six other times also impacting the Aggies' top-10 lists, including two in the 10,000, three in the steeplechase and one in the 5,000.

Kaitlin Gregg, who was No. 3 in the 10K, sliced more than a minute off her PR of 35:17.36, finishing her race in the top section of the event at Stanford in 34:01.20. That vaulted her past former Aggie great Linda Somers who went 34:38.64 in 1983.

Sarah Sumpter also moved in front of Somers into the No. 3 spot, taking third in her section in 34:28.84. She entered the meet 10th all-time at UC Davis with a previous best of 36:35.03 and capped an amazing evening for the Aggies' 10K crew at the prestigious meet which attracted some of the top distance runners in the country.

The Aggies also had a strong day in the steeplechase. Alison Stoakley finished fifth in her heat of the event at Stanford in 10:42.44 moving her from No. 3 to No. 2. She edged ahead of Caitlin Fitzgerald, who also had a PR in 10:45.56 while competing at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, and is now third. Samantha Kearney moved up five spots to fifth, crossing the finish line at SFSU in 11:10.42.

The other top-10 mark came from Krista Drechsler in the 5,000 who took fifth place in her heat at Stanford in 17:04.71. She is now ninth on the Aggies' list after her impressive race.

UC Davis, which will have limited athletes at Stanford on Saturday, will also open competition at the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA. That meet continues throughout the weekend.
