Freshmen Pace Aggies To 16-5 Victory

March 25, 2010

Final Stats

LORETTO, Pa. - Freshman Hannah Mirza scored five goals while Elizabeth Datino added three goals and a season-best four assists, leading UC Davis to a 16-5 win over Saint Francis in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action at DeGol Field Thursday morning.

The Aggies improve to 7-2 on the season. The Red Flash snap a three-game winning streak, moving to 6-4 overall.

Senior Molly Lapolla contributed a pair of goals and matched Datino's sum of four assists. Yet another freshman, Anna Geissbuhler, provided two goals and two assists in the game. Defensively, senior Molly Peterson posted four caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

Sophomores Chelsea Kent and Katie Jenkins accounted for all five of SFU's five goals. Kent performed a hat trick with one assist, Jenkins netted the remaining two goals.

UC Davis stormed to a 7-1 lead within the first 16 minutes of play, including five unanswered to start the contest. Datino had two goals and an assist in that run, while the Lapolla-to-Mirza combination struck three times. Jenkins took advantage of an extra-player situation to hit an eight-meter attempt for SFU with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half, then Kent scored and assisted on goals in the final two minutes to bring the halftime tally to 8-4.

Datino helped pad the Aggie lead after the break, converting a Gina Hoffmire feed within minutes after the initial second-half draw, then assisting Geissbuhler's second goal in the 40th minute to push the tally to 10-5. UC Davis rolled to six more unanswered in the final 10 minutes to claim the 11-goal win.

Remarkably, Saint Francis outdrew its guest by a relatively wide 16-7 margin. However, the Aggies limited the Red Flash to only 16 shots -- including just six in the second period -- while committing just nine turnovers to their opponent's 27.

UC Davis takes a weekend off from competition before returning to action for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Denver on April 9.
