UC Multi Complete Results
BERKELEY, Calif. - Will Guthrie and Robert Neely held their positions Thursday to finished second and third, respectively, in the B section of the decathlon at the UC Multi Meet, while senior Anikia Jackson was third in the top group of the heptathlon, highlighting UC Davis' performance at the two-day competition at Cal.
Both Guthrie and Neely posted personal-bests at the meet. Guthrie, who had a trio of top-three finishes on Thursday including a first in the javelin, scored 6,286 points to better his previous best of 6,138 he earned at last year's Big West Conference Championships. Neely entered with a career-high 6,030 points - also from the conference meet last spring - but edged past it this week, tallying 6,053.
Jackson moved up a spot in the final heptathlon standings, finishing with 4,800 points after winning the long jump and taking second in the javelin.
Guthrie's highest point total came in the 110-meter high hurdles where he earned 692 after finishing fifth in 16.37 seconds. His first-place mark of 167-5 in the javelin picked up 604 points. Guthrie also had strong placings in the discus (113-1) where he was third, and in the pole vault (12-9.5) where he tied for third.
Neely opened the second day with a runner-up finish in the hurdles, scoring 747 points after crossing in 15.87, and then followed with a sixth place in the discus (104-8). He finished the day with 520 points in the 1,500 (5:07.06), always a grueling event at the end any decathlon competition.
Jackson scored 2,004 points over the heptathlon's three events on Thursday. Her victory in the long jump (17-9) was worth 674 points, she added 687 in the javelin (134-8) and then capped her meet with 643 in the tough 800 (2:34.05).
J. Patrick Smith of Chico State won the B section of the decathlon with 6,486 points while Idaho State's Cassie Merkley finished with 5,246 to capture the heptathlon.
UC Davis' next scheduled multi-event meet is at Azusa Pacific on Apr. 14-15.
The remainder of the Aggie track and field teams will be in action this weekend at San Francisco State, Stanford and at the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA.
