BERKELEY, Calif. - Will Guthrie and Robert Neely are in second and third, respectively, in the B section of the decathlon of the UC Multi Meet at Cal, separated by just three points, while Anikia Jackson is a solid fifth in the A section of the heptathlon after the first day of competition on Wednesday.
Guthrie, who won the shot put with a mark of 36 feet, compiled 3,337 points, finishing the first five events near the lead in the 14-person field. Neely is barely behind his teammate, posting 3,334 points after highlighting his day with a first place in the long jump at 22-4.25.
The Aggie duo trails Patrick Smith of Chico who has 3,550 points at the midway point.
Jackson, a former community college heptathlon champion at Bakersfield College, has 2,796 points through the first four events of her competition, opening the day with a third-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.74 seconds. Idaho State's Cassie Merkley leads the field with 3,196 points.
Guthrie finished no lower than sixth in any event on Wednesday, also taking third in the 100 (11.43) and fourth in the long jump (20-6.50). His two best scores came in the 100 where he earned 767 points, and in the 400 where he picked up 763 after placing fifth in 51.13.
Neely scored 784 in the 100 (11.35) for his best score, tallied 769 with his win in the long jump and then later tacked on 710 in the 400 (51.09).
Jackson's third place in the 100 hurdles gartnered her 876 points for her best total of on Wednesday while her fifth-place finish in the last event - the 200 - earned her 775 after she crossed in 26.26. Jackson finished first in last year's UC Multi Meet with 4,903 points, placing her second all-time at UC Davis.
Guthrie has a personal-best of 6,138 points in the decathlon while Neely's PR is 6,030. Both tallied those totals at last year's Big West Championships.
The decathlon finishes on Thursday with the 110 high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run. The heptathlon concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800.
