DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Molly Lapolla, junior Gina Hoffmire and freshman Hannah Mirza each tallied four goals to lead UC Davis to a 21-11 win over Saint Mary's in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 2-0 overall and in conference play. The Gaels fall to 1-3 for the year, 0-2 in MPSF games.
Senior Britt Farquharson recorded three goals with two assists for five total points, while freshmen Anna Geissbuhler and Elizabeth Datino each posted 2-2-4 offensive lines. Defensively, sophomore Vannessa Jamison had a team-high five ground balls and was one of five Aggies to record a pair of steals.
For the Gaels, sophomore Juliet Munroe shot 5-for-8 with four draw controls while Mariah Walk added 2-1-3 offense and a game-best seven draw controls.
UC Davis exploded out of the gates as Hoffmire scored two goals in the first four minutes of play in a run of five unanswered. Geissbuhler later assisted on goals to Mirza and Christina Corsa, then Lapolla tallied three goals in the span of three minutes to extend UC Davis' lead to 10-1.
Munroe converted an eight-meter attempt in the 20th minute, then received an assist from Caroline Mahony in the 25th as part of a 5-1 Gael finish in the half. UC Davis led 12-6 at the break.
Saint Mary's never approached any closer in the game, as the Aggies scored five of the first six goals in the second half to extend their advantage to 17-7. Farquharson scored her team's 20th and 21st goals of the game. That scoring total ranks tied for fifth in school history, matching marks set against Howard (2009), Robert Morris (2006) and Claremont (2000).
Other highlights on the boxscore included junior Alyse Lasater, who tallied three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. As a team, UC Davis held a commanding edge in ground balls (25-14) and shots (31-21), while converting 15 of 22 clear attempts through the midfield.
Jillian Chong provided four goals and an assist off the bench for SMC.
UC Davis returns to action at Villanova on Thursday as part of a five-day, three-game road trip in the northeast.
