DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team split a doubleheader against BYU Thursday at Dobbins Stadium in Davis. The Aggies first took a 3-0 shutout victory behind another strong pitching performance by sophomore Dayne Quist, then fell 10-2 in the nightcap to move to 4-2 overall. BYU earned their first win of the season to move to 1-4.
In the first game, Quist turned in another impressive outing as he went 7.0 shutout innings. He gave up only five hits while striking out four to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the season. Tom Briner was credited with the save.
The loss was attributed to Justin Shutt who gave up seven hits and two runs in 5.0 innings.
Daniel Cepin led the Aggie offense for the second straight day. After a 5-for-5 outing against Cal Thursday, Cepin went 3-for-4 against BYU with one run.
For the Cougars, Brandon Relf, Dane Nielsen, and Stephen Wells all were 1-for-3 on the day.
UC Davis struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning to take a quick lead. David Popkins used a sacrifice fly to bring home Cepin and Justin Schafer scored the second run off a double to center field by Eric Johnson. UC Davis nearly had three runs to start the game as Lyman tried to score from first base off the Johnson double, but he was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.
The Aggies would get their third run in the seventh when Kyle Mihaylo hit a solo homerun over the left field fence.
BYU nearly got on the board in the second inning. Jonathan Cluff singled to left field, then stole second and advanced to third off a single by Relf. Cluff, however, attempted to score from second but was thrown out at the plate by a strong throw from Mihaylo in right field to end the inning.
The Cougars came out strong in the second game, however, as Alex Wolfe led the BYU offense, going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. BYU also saw an impressive performance by Cluff who was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Matthew Neil earned his first win of the season as he threw 5.0 innings for the Cougars, giving up nine hits and two runs while striking out two Aggie batters.
For UC Davis, Scott Lyman was given the loss after giving up seven runs in only 3.1innings, despite striking out six batters.
BYU got on the board first, but the Aggies tied the game at one run apiece after Schafer scored on a single by Johnson. The Cougars, however, would score in the next four innings, including three runs in the second inning, to establish a strong lead over the Aggies. UC Davis scored a second run in the fourth inning, but struggled to bring runners home and left 14 Aggies on base throughout the entire game.
UC Davis will look to win its second straight series of the year Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
