Final Stats
DAVIS, Calif. - Junior attacker Christina Corsa posted three assists while four Aggies tallied two goals each, lifting UC Davis to a 12-10 win over California in a season-opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies open the season at 1-0, posting their first win over the Golden Bears since 2001. Cal starts off the year at 0-1 overall and in MPSF play.
Senior Britt Farquharson, junior Gina Hoffmire and freshmen Hannah Mirza and Anna Geissbuhler each tallied two goals to pace the UC Davis offense. Sophomore Vannessa Jamison led the Aggie defense with four ground balls and a pair of steals. Corsa and Mirza also helped UC Davis win the battle of draw controls, tallying five and four, respectively.
Farquharson had both of her goals in the first half, including a buzzer-beater to send the Aggies into the break with a 4-3 lead. After Cal's Alyse Kennedy scored the second of her three goals immediately in the second period, UC Davis hit six of the next seven strikes. Corsa assisted Mirza on back-to-back goals in the 34th and 39th minutes, then Hoffmire converted a pair of eight-meter opportunities at 40:58 and 41:35 to push the Aggie lead to 10-5.
Cal managed to close the gap down the stretch, as Kennedy recorded a goal and assist around the 50th minute. Corsa and senior Molly Peterson each netted goals to extend UC Davis' edge back to five with 3:18 remaining. Sophomore Allie Welsh hit an eight-meter chance to ignite a run of three unanswered Golden Bear goals, but UC Davis managed to control the clock well enough to protect its lead.
The Aggies outshot their guests by a 27-15 edge, and were a perfect 18-for-18 in clearing the midfield.
Kennedy and Welch each had hat tricks for the Golden Bears. Kennedy also had a pair of assists for five total points.
UC Davis returns to action on February 27 for an MPSF home battle with Saint Mary's.
