NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - Four birdies on the front nine fueled a strong start by UC Davis junior Austin Graham who went on to finish with a 2-under 69 - his second consecutive round in the 60s - and pushed him into a third-place tie going into Tuesday's final round of the Battle at the Beach at Pelican Hill Golf Club.

Graham, who shot a 68 in Sunday's first round, sits at 5-under 137, just three shots behind Chris Williams of Washington who had a 65 on Monday. UC Davis, which remains in 14th place after 36 holes, improved its team score by seven strokes, shooting 13-over 368 and trails 13th-place San Francisco by just two shots. The Aggies are at 33-over 743 overall.

The Battle at the Beach, co-hosted by Long Beach State and UCLA, uses each squad's five best scores from its six-person team. Most tournaments consist of five-player teams with the top four cards comprising the score.

UC Davis' second-round score was also highlighted by 70 from sophomore Tyler Raber and a 73 from junior Tim Honeycutt. Raber is tied for 51st at 5-over while Honeycutt is tied for 57th at 8-over. Freshman Josh Granger shot 77 and is at 11-over, Brent Booth carded a 79 and is tied for 80th and Andrew Haggen posted an 80 and is also tied for 80th.

Oregon State remained in the team lead and holds a three-shot advantage over No. 6 Washington. The 24th-ranked Beavers are at 9-under 701. UCLA, ranked 14th is six shots behind at 701 while No. 48 Arkansas (710) and Texas-Arlington (715) finish the top five.

Graham got off to a good start, carding a birdie on the par-5, 542-yard No. 1 for the second straight day. He added three birdies over the final four holes of the front nine, making the turn three under. Two bogeys to open the back put him at 1-under but a birdie on the par-5 17th got him back to two shots in the red. He's tied with second-ranked Diego Velasquez of Oregon State. The Beavers' Mike Barry is at 6-under and in second place.

Raber jumped 16 spots in the standings, playing the back nine two under and finishing the day with four birdies. His 70 was seven shots better than his opening-round score.

The final round will begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday morning.
