NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - Junior Austin Graham carded seven birdies en route to a 3-under 68 on Sunday, pacing the UC Davis men's golf team in the first round of The Battle at the Beach Tournament, co-hosted by Long Beach State and UCLA.

The tournament, which counts the best five of each team's six scores rather than the usual four of five, is being played at the 6,945-yard Pelican Hill Golf Course Ocean North. The Aggies posted a 20-over 375 on the first day and are in 14th place, a shot behind San Francisco and four back of 13th-ranked Tennesseee, which is in 12th.

Oregon State, ranked 24th, posted a 7-under 348 and leads No. 48 Arkansas by one stroke atop the team leaderboard with two rounds remaining. San Diego State, ranked 35th, is in third, four shots behind the Beavers while No. 6 Washington (353) and No. 14 UCLA (354) round out the top five.

Graham, from San Clemente, is looking for his third top-five placing in the 2009-10 season. He's off to a good start after draining three birdies on the front nine and four more on the back. Graham had three in a row, and four in five holes, covering the eighth through 12th holes.

He's in a four-player logjam in fifth place, just two shots behind co-leaders Mike Barry and Diego Velasquez of Oregon State who each had rounds of 66.

Freshman Josh Granger had three birdies in his Aggie debut, finishing with a 76 and is in a tie for 63rd. Tyler Raber, Tim Honeycutt and Andrew Haggen each shot 77 and are tied for 67th. Brent Booth is one shot back and tied for 73rd.

UC Davis will begin its second round at 8:10 a.m. The tournament, which features eight teams ranked in the top 50, concludes on Tuesday.
