Junior Edgaras Asajavicius scored two 6-on-5 goals in the first period to spark No. 9 Loyola Marymount to a 6-1 defensive win over No. 13 UC Davis in the battle of the Western Water Polo Association's top two men's teams at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday evening.
The Aggies fall to 15-8 for the year and suffer their first conference loss to move to 12-1. The Lions improve to 14-8 for the year and now match UC Davis with a 12-1 WWPA record.
Freshman Stuart Dooley managed the lone goal for UC Davis, putting his team on the board with 1:42 remaining in the second quarter. The Lions held a 4-1 lead at the break, then scored a goal in each of the third and fourth to pull away to the win.
The Aggies connected on just 1-for-18 in the contest, including 0-for-3 on extra-man opportunities and 0-for-1 on five-meter penalty shots. In contrast, LMU scored all four first-half goals on some type of exclusion: Asajavicius' goals in the first, a Robert Pusic 6-on-5 conversion in the opener and Derek Mulligan's penalty shot in the second.
UC Davis returns to action in a week with its home finale against Stanford. Game time is 6 p.m.
