STOCKTON, Calif. -- Senior Austin Graham collected three birdies on the back nine, pushing him under par and helping him post a 1-under 70 on Monday as the UC Davis men's golf team opened tournament action at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational at Brookside Country Club.
The Aggies shot a 9-over 293 team score, also getting rounds of 73 from defending medalist Tyler Raber, 74 from Tim Honeycut and 76s from Andrew Haggen and Matt Hansen. UC Davis is in ninth place, just five shots behind No. 39 Charlotte, Santa Clara and Fresno State which are tied for sixth.
Host Pacific opened a five shot lead after the first round, firing a 12-under 272 to lead No. 36 Oregon State (277) which is in second. Marquette (280) is in third with Saint Mary's (281) and Nevada (287) rounding out the top five.
Jonnie Motomochi of Oregon State, with the help of a hole-in-one on the 12th hole, shot a 65 to tie Patrick Kucich of Pacific for the opening-day lead. Rick Lamb of Santa Clara is one shot off the pace.
Graham had seven pars on two bogeys on his front nine on Monday but then opened the back with a birdie on the par-5, 10th and the par-3, 12th, capping his round with another one on the par-5, 16th to play the final nine holes three shots under par.
Raber had nine consecutive pars and then carded a birdie on the par-5, 18th to help highlight his round of 73. The Aggie junior had rounds of 64 and 63 during the first two rounds of last year's event at Brookside Country Club, eventually finishing first and helping the Aggies capture the team title.
Honeycutt, playing in his first tournament of the fall, had three birdies in his round of 74 while Haggen had four and Hansen one during their rounds.
The 54-hole tournament, which concludes on Wednesday, is the last event of the fall season for UC Davis. The Aggies will play with Fresno State and Santa Clara in Tuesday's second round and will begin teeing off at 8:45 a.m.
