STOCKTON, Calif. - Casey Wollbrinck scored two goals for the UC Davis field hockey team, helping the Aggies advance into overtime where they eventually took a 4-3 win after penalty strokes vs. Pacific Saturday, at Brookside Field in Stockton, Calif. The game marked the first time in program history that an Aggie contest was decided by penalty strokes.

Marissa Hughes scored the game winning penalty stroke to give UC Davis the victory. With the win, the Aggies improved to 6-9 and 2-4 in NorPac competition and secured the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, while the Tigers dropped to 2-14 and 0-6 in conference play.

The Tigers managed to take advantage of some early opportunities in the first half, posting a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes.

UC Davis had the first three shots of the game, but Pacific answered with four unanswered shots of their own, capped off by the first score of the game. Sarah Miceli provided the score for the Tigers in the eighth minute of play, her first goal of the season.

UC Davis managed to bounce back at the 27:30 mark, scoring on a penalty corner, with Casey Wollbrinck finding the bottom right of the cage. Despite am 8-6 advantage in shots for the Aggies, they took a 2-1 defecit into the intermission.

The scoring continued early and often in the second half, with multiples ties and lead changes. The Aggies took advantage of a Tiger miscue, evening the score at two apiece in the 38th minute, thanks to a Marissa Hughes penalty stroke.

Late in the second half, Pacific took back the lead, using a Jenna Vivian goal to go up 3-2 in the 61st minute. UC Davis didn't waste anytime providing another equalizer, as Casey Wollbrinck tallied her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

The Aggies had five more shots in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't manage the go ahead goal, as the game extended into overtime with a 3-3 tie.

UC Davis was the aggressor in the first overtime, out shooting Pacific 6-3, while taking four shots on goal. Neither team could find the back of the net however, as the was sent to the second overtime, still tied 3-3. The second overtime was no different, with the Aggies failing to convert on one of their nine shots. UC Davis out shot Pacific 34-22, but the game was moved to penalty strokes after the scoreless overtime periods.

In the stroke off, Lauren Sawvelle came up with a pair of huge saves for the Aggies, as the Tigers failed to convert on their first two shots. Lydia Brambila and Lindsey Valadez each scored to put UC Davis up 2-0, before the Hughes goal gave the Aggies a 3-1 advantage. Another Tiger miss secured the win for UC Davis with a final 4-3 score.

Lauren Sawvelle earned the win after seven saves, while Christina Niccum and Ashlee Schlesier split time in goal for Pacific.

"The game was exciting," said head coach Vianney Campos. "As a team we started flat and out of our game. This put us down 2-0 early, which against an aggressive team like Pacific is not very smart. After our timeout we all agreed; things needed to change fast. They were very determined and never game up until they put the game away. Both teams had many opportunities, but thanks to an all around offensive and defensive effort, we came out on top."

UC Davis will begin competition in the NorPac tournament next week on Wednesday, Nov. 3 in Davidson, N.C.
