ANN ARBOR, Mich. - UC Davis field hockey went up against No. 6 Ohio State Saturday, dropping a 4-0 contest at neutral site Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. Coyle Aisling recorded three goals for the Buckeyes to bring her total to 21 on the year, en route to the win.
The Aggies hung tough in the first half, trailing 1-0 at the intermission, before the OSU used three second half goals to put the game out of reach. With the loss, UC Davis dropped to 5-8 overall, while Ohio State improved to 13-3.
The Buckeyes managed an early score for a 1-0 lead, taking advantage of an Aggie miscue in the 3rd minute. Aisling converted on a penalty stroke, to post her first of three scores.
Despite nine shots and three penalty corners for OSU in the first half, UC Davis did not surrender another goal in the first half. The Aggies had two shots of their own, one of which was on goal, but they couldn't find the back of the cage, keeping the score at 1-0 during the break.
The Buckeyes stayed aggressive in the second half, as Aisling posted two more goals at the 47 and 59 minute mark, to give OSU a 3-0 advantage.
UC Davis had three shots in the second half, with two shots on goal, but remained scoreless for the game. The Buckeyes added one more goal in the 68th minute, with Jena Cacciatore's ninth goal of the season that made it a 4-0 final score.
Lauren Sawvelle recorded a complete game in goal for the Aggies, after four saves for the day. For OSU, it was Ally Tunitis receiving the win and the shutout after three saves.
"The team played well against OSU, held them defensively as much as we could especially in the first half," said head coach Vianney Campos. "We found ourselves controlling a good amount of the possession but couldn't get results in the circle. Against a team like OSU, our low number of opportunities need to be converted."
"We left with a good idea of what we need to do tomorrow and heading into our last weeks of the season," continued Campos. "We felt this game again proved we are able to compete, but one half of great play is not enough, we need 70 minutes."
UC Davis will be back in action tomorrow, staying in Ann Arbor to play No. 12 Michigan in an 8 a.m. contest.
