SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior center Aaron Salit scored a total of eight goals in two games to lead 11th-ranked UC Davis to a 9-6 win over No. 20 Brown and an 11-9 overtime victory over No. 15 Cal Baptist at the Rodeo men's collegiate water polo tournament at Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday.
The Aggies improve to 14-6 for the year.
Salit tallied a team-high three goals in the day's opener against Brown, helping UC Davis pull away from a tight 3-2 halftime battle. Walter Eggert added two goals, while Teddy Nicholson, Cory Lyle, Matt Richardson and Mattie Stone chipped in one each. Eggert scored both of his goals in the third period, pushing the Aggies to a 7-2 lead entering the fourth. Junior goalie Kevin Peat tallied 14 saves.
In the nightcap against CBU, Salit netted five goals with three steals while Lyle and Eggert contributed two goals each. Eggert's 6-on-5 conversion early in the second period put UC Davis ahead by a 4-2 advantage, but Lancer sophomore Brent Troutman connected on a pair of scores to even the game at 5-5 heading into the break.
The Aggies forged ahead to a 7-5 lead early in the third and held a 9-7 edge midway through the fourth. But CBU driver Chris Toy connected on an extra-man opportunity with 2:12 left, then Aaron Steiger equalized with just nine ticks remaining in regulation.
Senior Carlos Martinez put UC Davis ahead with his 6-on-5 score in midway on the first three-minute overtime period. Salit padded the edge to the final two-goal margin with his goal at the 0:44 mark. The Aggies held the Lancers scoreless in the second overtime to close out the win.
The Aggies take on Western Water Polo Association foe Air Force at 10:15 on Sunday morning, then finish the Rodeo tourney with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Bucknell. The Bison are tied with Brown for the 20th spot in Wednesday's national rankings.
