Graham's Strong Final Round Helps Aggies Take Sixth

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Senior Austin Graham shot a team-best 3-under 69 on Tuesday, fershman Matt Hansen carded a 72, and the UC Davis men's golf team had its best round of the tournament, placing sixth at The Prestige at PGA WEST at TPC Stadium Course.

The Aggies fired a 3-over 291, its lowest score of the week by five shots, finishing ahead of seventh-place Central Florida by one shot. California, one of eight top-50 ranked teams entered in the tournament, fended off a challenge from No. 21 Stanford and No. 7 Washington to win by three strokes at par-864. The Cardinal and Huskies finished three strokes back.

Graham's round was the only one in the 60's for UC Davis during the tournament and tied him for 20th at 4-over 220. Teammate Andrew Haggen also tied for 20th after finishing with a 75. Freshman Daniel Covrig, playing his first tournament as an Aggie, tied for 32nd at 8-over 224 after shooting 76 on Tuesday while Hansen's strong round put him in a tie for 43rd at 10-over.

Junior Tyler Raber shot his second straight 75 to tie for 59th at 15-over 230 while freshman Matt Seramin finished with a 79 and tied for 75th.

Stanford's Andrew Yun had a tournament-best 65 over the final 18 holes. combining it with rounds of 70 and 69 earlier to capture medalist honors at 12-under 204. Thomas Buran of Arizona State was second at 6-under while Cal's Ben An took third at 5-under. A dozen players finished the 54-hole event at the 7,300-yard course at par or better.

Graham led the Aggies on Tuesday with a pair of birdies and eight pars over his first 10 holes to get two shots under par. He bogeye the course's first hole before rallying with two more birdies down the stretch to finish with a 69. Hansen had a solid round with 16 pars, a birdie and just one bogey, improving from his second-round score by eight shots.

Raber had two birdies - both of them early in his round - in shooting his 75 while Haggen had one during his round. Covrig and Seramin also each had a birdie.

The tournament, in its 11th year, is a showcase for the UC Davis and Stanford programs, bringing together some of the top academic and golf-playing institutions annually to La Quinta to face world-renowned courses at PGA WEST. Six teams in this year's field are ranked among Golfstat's top 25.

UC Davis will return to action next week when it competes in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational hosted by Cal on Monday and Tuesday.
