DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept UC San Diego in a dual meet at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday as the Aggies honored eight senior swimmers and divers who competed in the final meet of their Aggie career.
The men took a 174-122 win over the Tritons to complete the dual meet season at a perfect 8-0. The Aggie women edged UC San Diego 155-145 and close out the season with a 5-6 overall record.
The Aggie women won both relay events and were paced by Ashley Chandler who swam the leadoff spot in both relays and picked up two individual wins on the day. Chandler came in first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.20 and won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.47.
Chandler, Morgan Lee, Kayleigh Foley and Jen Cadmus combined to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:46.05.
The men also began the day with a win in the 200 medley relay with Jimmy Fong, Kyle Anderson, Daniel Donnelly and Russ Underwood clocking in at 1:32.79.
UC San Diego picked up their first win of the day when Beth Dong easily outpaced the rest of the field in the 1000 freestyle. She finished in a time of 10:34.99 and was followed by UC Davis' Grace Benefield who placed second with a time of 10:43.20.
In the men's 200 freestyle, UC Davis swept the top three positions with Alex Daneke, Adam Borchard and Josef Stitts finishing first, second and third, respectively. Daneke clocked in at 1:41.36 while Borchard finished with a time of 1:42.33. Stitts recorded a time of 1:44.80.
In the women's 100 breaststroke, Morgan Lee was narrowly edged by UC San Diego's Mercedes O'Brien who finished first with a time of 1:06.29. Lee came in second with a time of 1:06.42 and was the Aggies' top finisher in the event.
UC San Diego finished one-two in the 50 freestyle as Dan Perdew and Blake Langland narrowly edged out Underwood. Perdew clocked in at 21.16, however Langland finished with a time of 21.39 while Underwood and Stitts tied for third by touching simultaneously at the 21.40 mark.
The men's 100 freestyle would also prove to be a close race as Todd Langland clocked in at 46.58 to finish first. His time was a mere 0.04 seconds faster than UC Davis' Alex Daneke who came in second with a time of 46.62.
Overall the UC Davis women won six individual events, but wins in both relays proved to be a great help for the Aggies. In the 400 freestyle relay, UC Davis' "A" team of Chandler, Katelyn Griffin, Jen Cadmus and Kayleigh Foley swam evenly with UC San Diego's "A" team. In the final anchor leg of the relay, Kayleigh Foley swam her 100 yards in a mere 50 seconds and propelled the Aggies to the win. UC Davis clocked in at 3:29.74 while UC San Diego finished at 3:29.90.
In diving, Jennifer Meyer and Paul Navo led UC Davis as both took home victories in the 1-meter event. Meyer recorded a score of 227.55 while Navo edged UC San Diego's Bryan McGrory with his score of 279.38. Danielle Niculescu won the three-meter event for the Titans with a score of 254.33 while McGrory finished first on the three-meter board with a score of 267.90. McGrory narrowly defeated Jason Andrade who turned in a score of 264.99.
UC Davis will now prepare for the Big West Conference Championships which begin Feb. 17 in Long Beach, Calif.
