KINGSLEY, Mich. - Junior Austin Graham capped a strong tournament at the Michigan State Spartan Classic on Sunday, shooting par-71 in the final round to earn third place at 5-under and leading the UC Davis men's golf team to runner-up honors behind Cal.
The Aggies posted a 6-under total of 846, finishing 10 shots behind the Golden Bears. Host Michigan State and San Francisco tied for third at 11-over while Detroit was fifth a shot back of the Spartans and Dons.
Graham helped pace the Aggies on Sunday and was backed in the team scoring by a 72 from Andrew Haggen, a 73 from Tim Honeycutt, and a 74 from Tyler Raber.
Graham's final round helped him with his top-three finish after he opened the 13-team tournament with rounds of 68 and 69 on Saturday. He tied with David Byrne of Detroit and Scott Travers of Santa Clara for third.
Raber had the Aggies' best round of the event, and one of four in the 60's, when he fired a 5-under 66 in the second round on Saturday. He finished in eighth place at 1-under for the first top-10 placing of his UC Davis career.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Haggen had a steady tournament, opening with a 71 before carding back-to-back 72's for a three-round total of 2-over 215 that tied him for 14th. Booth, who had a 67 in Saturday morning's round, tied for 21st at 4-over while Honeycutt tied for 42nd at 12-over.
The tournament was contested at The Kingsley Club. The Aggies had a successful opening week to the 2009-10 season after finishing third at Washington State earlier.
UC Davis is off until competing in the Windon Memorial Classic at Northwestern University on Oct. 4-5.
