STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman attacker Colin Hicks scored four goals while junior Cory Lyle added two, leading UC Davis to an 11-8 upset of 10th-ranked Pacific in the second of two contests at the NorCal Invitational collegiate men's water polo tournament at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies previously fell to the host Cardinal by a 16-3 score in the revered tournament's opening match.
UC Davis, ranked 18th in Wednesday's national coaches' poll, moves to 5-2 for the season.
Sophomore Luke Collins posted two goals and freshman Kevin Driscoll had one in the morning loss to No. 2 Stanford. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Peat tallied 13 saves. A total of four Stanford players - Ryan Brown, Jeffrey Schwimer, Drac Wigo and Janson Wigo - performed hat tricks in the game to help the Cardinal ride a 7-1 halftime edge to victory.
In the Aggies' afternoon win, Hicks' four goals helped UC Davis overcome an 8-7 halftime deficit. Collins, Jim Breen, Carlos Martinez, Matt Richardson and Brendan Sigourney each had one score as the Aggies held the Tigers scoreless after the break. Peat again manned the cage for UC Davis, tallying six saves.
The NorCal Invite annually features a nationally ranked field, including each of the top 12 teams in this week's poll.
UC Davis will pick up action on Sunday, playing for the ninth through 12th spots in the tourney. The Aggies face the winner of the Air Force-Santa Clara matchup at noon at Belardi Pool.
