PULLMAN, Wash. - Newcomer Tim Honeycutt shot a 3-under 69 in the first round on Monday while junior Austin Graham had a 73 in the second, helping lead the UC Davis men's golf team to a tie for fifth place after the first two rounds of the season-opening Palouse Collegiate being hosted by Washington State.
Graham, who also had a 73 in the morning's round, is tied for 11th at 2-over 146 while Honeycutt, who transferred from Saint Mary's, is tied for 20th at 4-over 148. Redshirt freshman Andrew Haggen had a strong first round, carding a 72, before shooting 78 in the second to tie for 28th at 6-over.
Senior Brent Booth and sophomore Tyler Raber are each tied for 33rd at 7-over. Booth had a 75 in the opening round while Raber matched it in the second.
The Aggies opened the day with a 1-over 289 to place third heading into the second round, but then shot 302 to finish the day at 15-over 591. UC Davis is tied with San Jose State, 12 shots off the pace being set by leader Sacramento State.
The host Cougars are in second place, just one shot back, while Idaho is third, six strokes behind. Loyola Marymount is in fourth at 586. Washington State's Kevin Tucker had a second-round 66 to help him finish the day at 6-under 138 and a two-shot advantage over Jarred Bossio of Idaho in the individual standings.
Twelve teams are competing in the two-day event being contested at the 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
