EUGENE, Ore. - UC Davis' Ethan Ostrom cleared 15 feet, 11 inches in the pole vault on Thursday afternoon, tying for seventh at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
Ostrom, a freshman from Cottonwood, went over the bar at 15-11 on his first attempt and then missed on three opportunities at 16-4.75. He tied with unattached competitor Ryan McRight. Unattached vaulter Jack Whitt captured the event at 17-2.75 while Mike Arnold of Idaho State took second at 17-0.75.
This week's competition is serving as the selection meet for the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Trinidad next month. The top two individual placers in each event earn a spot on the U.S. team.
Ostrom competed in the NCAA West Regional at Oregon in May and had a season-best mark of 16-6.75. He is one of five Aggies competing in UC Davis uniforms at Hayward Field this weekend. Teammate Brock Bennett will compete in the javelin at the junior nationals on Sunday while 110-meter high hurdlers Jazz Trice and Polly Gnepa, and 400 hurdler Alex Wilright will race in the USA Outdoor Championships on Friday.
The USA Outdoor Championships, which will have the high-hurdles final on Saturday and the 400 hurdles final on Sunday, determine the U.S. Team to the World Championships later this summer.
