Final Stats
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Three Long Beach State players had RBI doubles and starter Jake Thompson allowed only two runs on eight hits through 7.2 innings in a 5-2 victory over UC Davis during the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series at Blair Field Saturday night.
With wins in the first two games, the 49ers take the series victory and improve to 22-20 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The Aggies fall to 7-34 and 1-13. An announced attendance of 1,776 were on hand during Evan Longoria bobblehead night.
Thompson struck out five batters and did not allow a walk in the victory. Reliever Charlie Ruiz struck out the side in the ninth inning for his 10th save of the season.
Aggie starter Dayne Quist had another solid outing in a tough loss as he pitched six innings and struck out five batters while allowing three earned runs on only six hits. Andy Suiter finished the game for UC Davis with two scoreless innings.
Offensivley for UC Davis, senior Ryan Scoma and freshman Joseph Medeiros accounted for the two RBIs. Sophomore Justin Schafer had two doubles and scored a run while junior Kyle Mihaylo also scored a run and doubled.
The Dirtbags had four different players drive home runs and were led by Taylor Krick's two hits. He was the only Long Beach player with multiple hits in the contest.
T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled home the first run of the game in second inning to put the Dirtbags on the scoreboard first. Kellen Hoime supplied a two-out RBI-single in the fourth and Krick double home another run in the sixth to make the score 3-0.
Medeiros broke the Aggies' scoreless streak with an RBI in the seventh inning. Mihaylo led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out by Grant Hirneise. Medeiros then grounded out to the shortstop to score Mihaylo.
The Dirtbags responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to jump ahed by four runs. Jones tallied the third RBI-double and scored an unearned run on two straight wild pitches.
The Aggies scored their second run in the eighth inning in identical fashion to the seventh as Schafer opened the inning with his second double and advanced to third on a Ty Kelly ground out. Scoma then grounded out to plate Schafer from third.
Kelly, Hirneise and Medeiros also had singles in the game, as did Daniel Cepin, Grant Bauer and Michael Aldrete.
